James was an avid fisherman, golfer, Atlanta Braves/Falcons and NASCAR fan. Ever the optimist, he would always catch the "Big One", shoot par and his team and driver would always win. He will always be remembered for his natural charm and quick wit, along with a story for every occasion. His quiet demeanor and keen sense of humor made him a welcome addition to any gathering, no matter the occasion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Most of his life's work was in the food service industry. At various times he managed stores for Morrison's, Cracker Barrel, and other places in North Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, where he managed a food and beverage venue for country singer George Jones. He also owned and operated a restaurant in Red Springs, NC for several years.
