He was the father of Verne Porter Murdoch & Anita M. Murdoch Jermyn.
He was a long time member of the Oswego Fire Department. He often told of when the village of Phoenix, NY, burned in 1916, that the sky glowed red so that it was visible in Oswego, at a distance of about 20 miles. They knew something big was burning and had the horse-drawn engines at a run before the call for help even came in. On the race to Phoenix to fight the fire which would devastate the village one of the fire-horses was severely injured, breaking a leg in its headlong run. The horse continued to race with the team, doing its duty in getting to the fire to fight the flames. Sadly it had to be destroyed, its injuries so grave there was no saving it, giving its life in the line of duty.
