Johann Wilhelm Conrad "Bill" Grónwold was born in Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Germany on March 22, 1890, the second child of Johann and Catharina Grónwold. Family members fondly knew him as "Uncle Bill," but as a boy he was likely known as "Willie."

Bill Grónwold spent the first years of his life in Cuxhaven. In late 1899, Bill joined his parents and four siblings (Henry, Annie, Elsie, and Emma) as they departed Cuxhaven and left the Port of Bremen, Germany aboard the SS Gera—enroute as immigrants to America. The Grónwold family arrived at New York harbor on January 21, 1900. Later that year the family settled in Prussia Township, Adair County, Iowa. In 1905, they moved to Brillian Township, Ward County, North Dakota.

Bill moved in Iowa in the late 1920s. Bill married Addie Cornelia Huff on August 1, 1929 at Greenfield, Iowa. Addie Cornelia (Huff) Grónwold was born at Fontanelle, Iowa on January 20, 1912.

Bill and Cornelia became parents of five children including Katherine Rosa, Anna Belle, Hannah Marie, John Conrad, and Rosalie.

Bill Grónwold died on January 9, 1979 at Van Meter, Iowa at the age of 88. Bill Gronwold was survived by his wife, Cornelia; a number of grand and great grandchildren; and his sisters, Elsie Liebelt and Emma Klinner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Henry and Bruno Grónwold; and a sister, Annie Sullivan/Dahl.

Cornelia (Huff) Grónwold died July 6, 1987 at Van Meter, Iowa. Bill and Cornelia Grónwold are buried in Trinity German Lutheran Cemetery in Jefferson Township, Madison County, Iowa.
