Bernard Lee Goodpaster of Albuquerque NM, formerly of Seneca, SC, Nashville, IN, Marion, IN and Hamilton, OH, passed away on June 5, 2016 at age 89.
Born on January 18, 1927 in Moores Hill, IN, he was the son of Bernard Goodpaster and Florence (Rollins) Goodpaster and the last surviving sibling of Elva Pruss, Rollin Goodpaster, Edward Goodpaster and Patricia Goodpaster.
Bernard lost his beloved wife, Betty (Tevis) Goodpaster in 2007. Bernard was also predeceased by son, Robin Goodpaster and infant daughter, Katrinka.
Bernard is survived by three children, Tobey Goodpaster (Patsy) of Marion, IN, Bruce Goodpaster (Carol) of Littlestown, PA and Elizabeth Austin (Eric) of Albuquerque NM. Bernard is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Bernard was a World War II veteran, graduating from high school early so that he could join the United States Navy at 17. Bernard and his PT boat crew-mates participated in the joyous Times Square NY celebration on VJ Day. Bernard worked for General Motors, mostly in Marion IN, for nearly 40 years. Bernard served many roles during that time and retired as tool-and-die maker and master craftsman. Bernard led a full and rich life.
Bernard began downhill skiing in his 40s and did not hang up his skis until his mid-80s. Bernard was a frequent volunteer in church activities, Boy Scout master, member of the Elks Lodge, Masons and the Knights of Pythias.
Bernard resided with his daughter and her family in Albuquerque, NM for the last several years. Bernard was a member of St. Stephens United Methodist Church.
A celebration of Mr. Goodpaster's life was held at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana on June 11, 2016.
