Bettye Lee Salter (Bates) passed away peacefully on December 12th at the age of 83. Bettye was born August 10th, 1931 to Robert H. Bates and Emma (Brann) Bates in Alexandria VA.

After high school she worked on Capitol Hill (DC) for the late Senator Ribicoff (Ct). While at the Senate she met her husband John L. Salter of Everett, WA who was a top aide to the late Sen. Henry M. Jackson (WA). They married in 1955 and had 3 daughters. In 1963 they moved to Everett Ave. in Seattle WA. She spent her time raising her daughters and hosting many political fund raisers and celebrations at her house.

In 1977, she opened a small jewelry store (Madison East) with her great friend in Madison Park. When her husband became ill she cared for him at home until his death in 1988 only to be put back to work the following year when she became a grandmother (Ga) to her first grandson. Her second grandson, was born in 1995.

She loved unique glass art supporting many budding artists while she accumulated her collection. Her greatest joy came from a bronze installation by the talented Georgia Gerber in downtown Everett. Named "Along Colby" in memory of her late husband, it features 3 dancing girls (to represent their 3 daughters). She was very generous and loved to buy gifts for all who touched her life. Christmas Eve was always at Bettye's house in years past and the big tree was dwarfed by all her presents! Bettye was proud that she was able to live on her own, in her house with no outside help until the time of her passing.

She is survived by her daughters, her grandsons, her brother and nephews. Bettye was a feisty, funny, honest, and generous woman who will be greatly missed.

Per Bettye's wishes there will be no services.
