Obituary, Charlotte [NC] Observer, Sun-Mon, 24-25 Apr 2011:

Robert Weir Elliot 'Bob'

Robert W. Elliot, of Charlotte, NC, died Friday, April 22, 2011 after a brief illness.

Bob was the third child of John L. and Ola Drew Elliot. A Charlotte native, he was the sole humble North Carolinian in a family of proud Virginians. A mammoth oak still stands, planted by his dad in celebration of his birth on August 29, 1924, in front of the house his parents built at 2121 E. Eighth Street.

Bob attended Central High School. He was active in the affairs of the Class of 1942 until his death. He enrolled at the University of North Carolina and lettered in football in 1943. His education was interrupted by World War II, but he returned to graduate in 1947.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a communications officer and was stationed at Guantanamo Bay at the end of the war. As a member of the Naval Reserve, he was called up to active duty for the Korean Conflict. Bob was stationed in Hawaii and Okinawa.

After being released from the service, he returned to Charlotte and a career in public accounting. Bob joined George G. Scott & Co. in 1947, and there he remained until his retirement in 1997. His father and brother, John Drew Elliot were also partners in the firm.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Jane E. Roseberry, his brother, John Drew Elliot, his wife Dorathy T. Elliot, and second wife, Bobbi H. Elliot.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Drew (Misty) Wright and her husband, Tim and three sons, Robert W. (Bo) Elliot, Jr. and his wife, Molly, Richard T. (Ret) Elliot and his wife, Gay, and James L. (Tiger) Elliot and his wife, Jessica; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of Charlotte.

Bob was a lifelong member of the YMCA. He was a member of the Y Whiffers, an amateur men's volleyball team, which evolved into a Thursday night meeting of men with infirmities. Bob also loved the Tar Heels of Carolina, salt water fishing, and Friendship Trays, where he was known as its longest serving temporary driver.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 1510 East Seventh Street, on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The family will greet friends in the church Parish House following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship Trays, 2401 Distribution Street #A, Charlotte, NC 28203.

J.B. Tallent Funeral Service is assisting his family.
