The son of Friedrich & Eliza (Weaver) Adams and stepson of Barbara H. Adams, he married Lovina Susanna Whiteknight and fathered William Haney (b. 10/06/57). Lovina died in 1858, and he married Sarah Rebecca Stallsmith, fathering Harry A. (b. 01/24/62, d. 12/06/65). In 1860, he was a tailor living in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with dark hair and black eyes. Lancaster County is also reported as his birth location.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-four in Adams County October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. D, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was soon promoted to 1st sergeant and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-six and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 17, 1864, as captain of Co. K, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 2, 1865.

Sarah died in 1866 and he married Catherine Weisensale October 31, 1869, at Conewago Chapel, Adams County.

Given his two stated ages at enlistment, the 1830 birth year shown here is questionable.
