Born to the late Frank Nathaniel McKinney (1883-1951) and Minnie Mattie Louella Wood-McKinney (1890-1974), Ms. Sykes had been a life-long resident of High Point born on tree-lined Maugum Avenue and spending her formative years on picturesque Cable Street. A graduate of Emma Blair Elementary School and High Point High School, her career lead her to such institutions as Adams-Millis of High Point, Hanes Hosiery of Winston–Salem and ultimately the US Veterans Administration Office in Winston-Salem from which she retired. Ms. Sykes' marriage was brief and ended tragically.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church of High Point, its Radiant Class Sunday School, and an ardent participant in its many missionary and humanitariam endeavors. She also was a foundation donor of the New Hanover Medical Center Foundation of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Survivors include her only child and beloved muse, Larry Kenneth Sykes and his wife JoAnn, both of Greer, SC; two granddaughters, Kathryn Denyse Sykes and Kimberly Dawn Sykes-Long; and two great-grandsons, Harrison Wilton Long and Houston Alexander Long. There are five surviving siblings: sisters Irene (Mrs. Dick K.) Pruitt, W. Juanita McKinney, Margaret G. (Mrs. Joseph) Arnold, all of High Point, and Colleen (Mrs. Numie C.) Parrish of Winston-Salem and Doris M. (Mrs. J.H.) Ruppert of New Orleans.

Loving and bereaved nephews and nieces include, Melissa Ann Ruppert-Jessen of Lake Charles, LA, J. H. Ruppert III and Gregory Allen Ruppert of New Orleans, Jason Keith Ruppert of San Jose, CA, Kenneth Blaine Parrish of Winston-Salem, and K. Jacob Ruppert of Louisiana and New York; grand-nephew Dietrich Walter Jessen III and grand-niece Johanna Ruppert Jessen also survive and deeply mourn her passing.

Ms. Sykes passed away quietly of septic shock after a brief and intense illness. Her son and other family members were at her side as she stepped from this Life to resume another.

Interment is at the McKinney Family grounds at Floral Garden Park Cemetery of High Point.
