Charles Barker was born Jan,3,1841 in Scott county,Va.He Married Lydia Querry Aug,30,1873.Charles"Whig" Barker served in the CSA as SGT.Co A,21st Battalion.VA infantry.He enlisted 9-16-1861 at Camp Lane ,Lee Co,Va.He was Paroled at Cumberland Gap,Ky 4-28-1865.One of the main aims of his company was to secure the lower section of Lee Co from invading Yankee army.The weather was very cold and he told of how they would rout cattle from a warm spot and stand where they had lain in order to warm their feet..While guarding the pass and being short on clothing it was hard to tell a yankee soldier form a confederate soldier.While resting they were surprised by yankee soldiers.They had no chance to escape or fire their guns.The enemy started questioning them and Charles started jumping around Yelling...I'm a whig...I'm a whig.His comrades did the same and started acting like they were crazy.This took the yankees by surprise.Thinking they had come upon a bunch of lunatics,they neither harmed them or took them prisoner but let them go instead.From that day on Charles was known as Whig by all who knew him and used the initial W in his name instead of R. Charles and Lydia had 10 children Launa and Wright Stickley ,Auburn,Sallie,Charles,Lucie,Alpha,Joseph,Hillman,and Harvey
