Sam was also a veteran of both World War II and Korea - He enlisted in the Army and only finished basic when Japan formally surrendered. He was stationed in Japan in 1946 as part of the occupational forces. In 1951 he was called back into service and was part of the 537th QM Dept, Eighth Army. He was promoted to Corporal and served in Seoul, South Korea, during the Korean War.
At the end of his service, Sam returned to Missouri and studied at Northwest Missouri State College, graduating with a dual-major in Library Sciences and Industrial Arts. It was there that he met his lifelong sweetheart Marilyn Brown. They were married on the 30th of July 1954.
Note: Sam's military grave marker is located at Brummett Cemetery in Mercer, Mo (which is only a few miles north of where the Elliott Family Homestead was located). A handful of his ashes were buried underneath that marker, while the majority are located in the urn interned here. (See Find a Grave Memorial ID: 95095210)
