Wyandotte teen drowns in Arkansas lake

Posted Jun. 10, 2016 at 2:00 AM

BULL SHOALS, Ark. — A Miami teenager was one of three people who died during two cliff-related accidents on Bull Shoals Lake during the first weekend in June.

William Carver, 18, drowned after he jumped off a bluff popularly known as Dinosaur Head near the Brown's Beach area, in Arkansas.

Carver graduated from Wyandotte High School last month, according to Principal Steve Buckingham.

Buckingham said the teen was on vacation at the time of his death.

“He was a hard-working kid that really worked hard his senior to overcome some obstacles and meet all our graduation requirements,” Buckingham said. “He was one of the kids I was really proud of that made it.”

He said Carver attended all four years at WHS.

According to a Marion County (Arkansas) Sheriff’s Office news release, on Friday, June 3, Carver swam to the bluff, climbed up and jumped into the water from a height of 30 to 40 feet, but had difficulty getting back to the boat and went under.

The sheriff's office was notified of the call just before 4:15 p.m. First responders from the Bull Shoals Fire Department, Flippin Fire Department, Marion County Search and Rescue, Marion County Dive Team and officers from Bull Shoals Police Department, Flippin Police Department and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission rushed to the scene.

Members of the dive team found Carver's body 40 minutes after the time of the initial call.

Services were held Thursday, June 9, at Eastside Assembly of God, east of Miami, under the direction of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

The Springfield News-Leader reported the three deaths occurred on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land at Bull Shoals Lake. Corps spokeswoman Laurie Driver said while it's not illegal to jump from cliffs into Corps lakes, the Corps strongly advises against it.
