Elmer was the son of Maggie Bolton and James Helton; he was the husband of Oreida Murphy and of Irene Shell. According to a letter written in the 1960's by his mother, Elmer owned the land on which the Bolton-Littrell Cemetery is located. She said that she wanted to be buried in the "home graveyard, Elmer Helton's place."
