In about 1907 he married Carrie Smith. The exact date and place are unknown. The facts of his marriage to Carrie Smith (i.e. the year and her maiden surname) come from the 1910 federal census on which they each stated the "Number of years of present marriage?" were '3'; and Carrie's maiden surname comes from their daughter, Lena Frances Adkins Grimm's, death certificate on which her mother's maiden name is listed as 'Carrie Smith' (with 'Carrie' misspelled as 'Carry').
Gus and Carrie had 8 children together, as far as the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses were able to provide such information to me: Raymond, Earl, Ada, Homer, Lena Frances, Henrietta, Edward and Blanche.
Using the federal censuses to follow his work history: in 1900 Gus was a day laborer; in 1910 he was a Teamster; in 1920 he was a farm worker, which he continued into 1930 when he was working on his own farm; in 1940 he was listed as "U" (unable to work) in the special column set up to monitor such things due to "The Great Depression." On Gus' 27 Apr 1942 WWII Draft Registration Card he stated that he was once again employed in working on his own farm.
Gus would leave his wife, Carrie, a widow on Thursday, 24 Feb 1944, as the result of a coronary thrombosis, ("development of a thrombus - a clot of coagulated blood that forms within a blood vessel or inside the heart and remains at the site of its formation, often impeding the flow of blood - that blocks a coronary artery, often causing myocardial infarction {destruction of an area of heart muscle as the result of occlusion of a coronary artery} and death" from "The Free Dictionary by Farlex").
