Lauren Sylvan Beran was born on Monday, February 10, 1919 in Redwood County, Three Lakes Township at the Theodore and Mary Dahmes home (his Grandpa and grandma) to Joseph and Florence (Dahmes) Beran. Lauren was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical United Brethren church in rural Wabasso. He attended Elementary School in Clements and graduated from Wabasso High School in 1937. After a period of working on the farm he attended college in Dubuque, IA, and later the University of Minnesota until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in August of 1942. After basic training at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, and Missouri he was sent to New York City for high power radio training and then assigned as Technical Sergent to the U.S. Army Signal Corp. He then served in Edmonton, Canada, Arctic Circle, Fort Lewis in Seattle, Washington, and Aleutian Islands before his honorable discharge in Seattle in December of 1945.

On July 7, 1944 he married Mildred Mae Wright in East Orange, NJ. He completed his education at Newark College of Engineering in New Jersey earning a degree in Electrical Engineering.

In December of 1949, Lauren, with his father, purchased the Redwood County Telephone Company. Lauren and Mildred then moved to Redwood Falls from New Jersey. He worked for the company until December of 2010, before moving to Sioux Falls, SD.

He was a member of the Masonic Hall (Mason’s), Countryside Council, Walnut Grove Foundation Board, and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Redwood Falls.

Lauren passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 97 years, 3 months, and 20 days.

He is survived by his children, Mildred (John) Sternick of Brandon, SD, Linda (Steven) Chambers of Sioux Falls, SD, and Joe (Judy) Beran of Wentworth, SD; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, his parents, sister, Muriel Shaw, brother-in-law, Loye Shaw, brother Ted Beran, and sister-in-law, Sara Beran
