Born on January 10, 1938 in Swampscott, MA. He was a son of Franklin M. and Neda M. Stone Atherton Sr.
And grew up there, graduating from Swampscott High School in 1954. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served there along with the Air Force Reserves before being Honorably discharged on April 28, 1963.
He was married to the former Janice Richardson.
In 1959, he moved to Orange and had worked at the former J. F. McElwain Co. In Athol, Erving Paper Mills, and the L. S. Starrett Co. In Athol. He later returned to Swampscott before moving to Lynn. While living on the North Shore, he worked for the General Electric Corp. In Lynn as a tool and die grinder. While living in Orange, he had been an active member of the Lighthouse on the Rock Church in Athol and was a Deacon and Secretary/Treasurer of the church. He was also a member of the Christian Coalition and the Right to Life Foundation. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and golfing.
Survivors include a son, Mark S. Atherton of Merritt Island, Florida; a daughter, Theresa "Terry" A. Trompke and her husband James, of Granby; a brother, David A. Atherton of Orange; sisters, Beverly Chamberlain of Merritt Island, Florida and Barbara Atherton of Farmington, Connecticut; a grandson, Brian Trompke; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held from Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Robert Parker of the Lighthouse on the Rock Church in Athol officiating.
Interment will follow in Tully Cemetery, Orange.
Calling hours will be Wednesday evening, August 25th from 6-8PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Lighthouse on the Rock Church, 500 Main Street, Athol, MA 01331.
