Courtney was born in Friesland, to Sam and Della (Haima) Sterk. He was married to Florence (Ettema) Sterk for 58 years and they had three children. After high school Courtney served two years in the U.S. Army and 18 years in the U.S. Air Force where he achieved the rank of master sergeant. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association. Following his honorable discharge from military service he followed his passion for driving in a variety of vehicles including semi-trucks, buses and limousines. He enjoyed bowling and singing in the church choir and the Colorado Springs Chorale. He was an active member of Cragmor Christian Reformed Church for 50 years. He never met a stranger and had many lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Sterk; his mother, Della (Haima) Sterk; brothers, Jake, Watson and Frank Sterk; and sister, Katie (Sterk) Levey.
He is survived by wife, Florence; son, Rory (Judy); daughters, Crystal (Mark) and Beth (Glenn); four grandchildren; and sister, Sara (Sterk) Sommers.
A time for visiting with family will be held April 15 at Swan Law Funeral Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. A memorial service will be held April 16 at Cragmor Christian Reformed Church, Colorado Springs. Inurnment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either the Rehoboth Christian School (http://www.rcsnm.org/memorialgifts.cfm) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
