Lillian Christine Engstrom Ostlund was born on February 7, 1903 in Spruce Hill Township, the daughter of Emil Julius Brandt and Kristine Marie Nelson Brandt. Following the death of her mother, due to complications of childbirth, she was raised by her maternal grandparents until the age of 10 when she rejoined an older brother and sister in Alexandria following her father's remarriage.
She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1921 and from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul in 1924. Lillian returned to Alexandria and worked at St. Luke's Hospital and then Tanquist Hospital (now Douglas County Hospital). She continued to do some special duty nursing until after World War II. On June 20, 1929, she married Edgar D. Engstrom of Engstrom Brothers Furniture. They had one son, E. Duane Engstrom. Edgar died in 1966 and after 21 years of widowhood Lillian married Aldrich Ostlund on August 8, 1987. They enjoyed eight wonderful years of companionship before Aldrich died in 1995. Lillian was a member of the Fortnightly Club and an active member of the United Methodist Church from 1932 to the time of her death.
