Son of George and Miriam (Johnson) Ropes. He was a member of the class of 1864 at Dartmouth College and taught school for several years. In 1880 he became a writer and editor of the "Vermont Watchman". On 28 June 1864 he married Mary J. Hutchins, daughter of George W. and Charlotte (McNider) Hutchins and their children were Charlotte and Laura.
