Alva was born in Alton, IL to Harvey Newton and Alva Mariah Skaggs Westbrook. She went to Los Angeles during WWII and met Eldon Grimm. They had two children, Bette Sue Grimm and Stephen Bruce Grimm.

She left many cousins and relatives in Ohio and Illinois.

She had breast cancer and died of liver cancer.

She was also a Jehovah's Witness.
