Son of Evan Ellis (1791-1871) and Margaret Hines-Ellis (Died in 1850).

Married to Margaret "Peggy" Short-Ellis (1819-1882).

Father of Evan C. Ellis (1837-1922), Eveline Ellis (1839-1888), Joseph A. Ellis (1841-Deceased), Mary Ellis (1844-1887), Powell S. Ellis (1847-Deceased), Anderson J. Ellis (1850-1917), Margaret C. Ellis-Gore-Short (1853-1939), Martha K. Ellis (1855-1902), & Demarius Ellis (1859-Deceased).

Henry was a Constable and Overseer of the Poor. He was a wealthy man and a large land holder in Wyoming County, WV. Henry was also a cattle farmer and trader. He was a deputy under Sheriff James D. McGraw. He originally lived in a log cabin, and added onto it and improved it several times. It remained standing until 1960, when it was torn down by one of his descendants and a new home was built out of the salvaged material.
