Life Legacy

William Jackson Hartman, 92, of Athens, died Thursday, May 19, 2016, at Princeton Community Hospital. Born April 22, 1924 in Athens he was the son of the late Arthur A. Hartman and Bertha Sue Duncan Hartman. He was a 1942 graduate of Athens High School and graduated in 1947 from Concord College with a B.S. Degree in Education. In 1952, Bill graduated from West Virginia University with a Master’s Degree in Education and Administration. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II in the Amphibious Forces where he earned the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon w/star in the Philippine Liberation. He also earned the Emblem of Amphibious Forces, American Theater Ribbon and the WWll Victory Medal while serving on the USS LST 452. He was a member of the Athens Baptist Church. Bill was a member of the West Virginia Retired Teachers Association, Concord College Alumni Association, member and Past Master of Concord Masonic Lodge #48, AF & AM, and Past Grand Lodge Master. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Goode Hartman; one sister, Margaret Jewell; two brothers, Raymond D. Hartman and Arthur A. Hartman, Jr; and one son-in-law, George G. Dickerson, Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Suzanne H. Dickerson of New York, NY; one grandchild, Erin Amarantha Dickerson; one brother-in-law, Paul Greer of Lewisburg, WV; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, May, 26, 2016 at the Athens Baptist Church in Athens with Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. Burial will follow at the Athens Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Concord Masonic Lodge #48.
