Robert E. Ayres, age 80, of the town of Saratoga, took the hand of Jesus on Monday, May 23, 2016 after a long courageous battle with cancer. His last weeks were spent at home surrounded by devoted, loving family and many caring friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, May 27, 2016 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Nekoosa. Rev. Dennis Schwalenberg will officiate. Burial will be at Bayview Cemetery in Necedah. Visitation will be held Friday at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Aspirus Comfort Care Hospice. Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home of Nekoosa is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at ritchayfuneralhome.com.

Bob was born April 28, 1936 in Necedah to Guy and Ethel (Davis) Ayres. He married S. Jean Chitwood on March 28, 1959 in Mauston. Bob served in the US Navy for four years as a hospital corpsman during the Korean War. He was stationed on the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier. He was employed by Nekoosa Papers, Inc. (Domtar) at the Port Edwards mill for 34 years, retiring in 1994.

His interests included hunting, fishing, traveling, and most of all spending time with his grandkids. After his retirement, he was a member of a sheepshead card group and was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Bob is survived by his wife, S. Jean Ayres; four children, Craig (Deb) Ayres of Port Edwards, Debra (Gary) Oetzman of Lodi, Carmen (Ken) Krueger of Eau Claire, Teri (Greg) Gerdes of Wisconsin Rapids; 11 grandchildren, Sam, Max, and Ben Ayres, Isaac and Emily Oetzman, Preston, Spencer, and Jasmine Hall, Codi (Sarah), Molly, and Noah Gerdes; and two brothers, James (Carol) Ayres and Kim Ayres.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Donald Ayres and one sister, Sue Bilz.
