Joseph Hutcheson, born 29 October 1839, was the fifth child born to James Hutcheson and Sarah Pickens Henry Hutcheson. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and served until he was captured in the fighting near Atlanta on August 7, 1864. He was a prisoner at Johnson's Island, Ohio until May 1865. Joe married Myrtis Harris in 1891 when he was 51 years old and built a home on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River in Carroll County, Georgia. He and his wife had 5 children. Mary L. and James Harris Hutcheson died as infants. Surviving children were: Sarah Almeda, Louise, and Joseph Arthur Hutcheson. When the children were adolescents, Joseph and his family moved to Decatur, Georgia so his children could attend school there.
