Services for Bettie Gene Miller, 80, of Portales, will be at 2 P.M., Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales, with David Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery. Jason Davis, Ethan Davis, Donnie Baldridge, John Bilberry, Sean Bilberry and Richard Baldridge will serve as pallbearers. The Conestoga Good Sams Club along with all other Good Sams will be honorary pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bettie (Gerber) Miller Scholarship Fund, c/o Friends of Eastern Foundation, ENMU, Portales, NM 88130.
Bettie passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. She was born June 21, 1926, in Curry County, N.M., to Neph and Sadie Gerber. She married Edwin Lee Baldridge, in January of 1945, and to this union was born three children. In 1969 she married W. F. Miller Jr.
Bettie received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from ENMU in Portales, N.M. and a Master of Science in Library Science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. She was the Portales High School librarian for 22 1/2 years. During her professional career she was active in local, state and national library and education associations. She received numerous honors, including induction into the NEA-NM Southwest Region Hall of Fame. Her biography appears in many publications including: Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, Who's Who of American Women, Dictionary of International Biography, and Who's Who in American Education.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Conestoga Good Sams, and a Crimson Circle life member of Good Sams International. Other organizations she belonged to were Portales Friends of the Library, Family Camping Club, Alpha Delta Kappa, AAUW, Altrusa International, Delta Kappa Gamma, FCE and Pep FCE, the hospital auxiliary, NM Retired Education Association, Family Motor Coach Association and Overland Trailblazers.
Her husband, W. F. Miller; her parents; a brother, Max Edgar Gerber; and a sister, Maxine Price preceded her in death. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Dianne and George Davis of Clovis, Richard Baldridge of Broadview, N.M. and Debra and Monty Bilberry of Los Alamos, N.M.; along with five grandsons, Jason and Ethan Davis, Donnie Baldridge and wife, Lindsey, John and Sean Bilberry; and two great-grandsons, Colton and Dalton Baldridge.
