Bertha is the daughter of James H. and Ida E. (Jackson) Mellon of Lynn, Mass. She married James Barnet Hughes.

Cards have been received in town announcing the marriage reception of Bertha Jackson Mellon and James Barnet Hughes, Jr, Wednesday evening, April 3, from 8 until 9:30, at 16 McKinley Avenue, Beverly, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes will be at home after June 1, at Church Street, Whitingsville, Mass. Mr. James B. Hughes, Jr., is an Ashland young man, graduating from the local graded schools and spending his boyhood days in this place. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Hughes, formerly of this place, but now residing in Concord. His many friends in Ashland join in wishing he and Mrs. Hughes a long life of happiness in their new relations. >The Plymouth Record, March 30, 1907, p5.

Mrs. Bertha J. Hughes, formerly of Plymouth died Sunday morning, October 22nd at her home in Hartford, Connecticut following a brief illness. She was born August 9, 1884 in Marlboro, Mass., daughter of Harry and Ida (Jackson) Mellon, She received her education in Lynn, Mass. She married James Barnet Hughes April 3, 1907 at Beverly, Mass. and they lived in Whitinsville where their two sons, Francis Ellsworth and Norman A. were born. They later moves to Meredith and about twenty years ago moved to Plymouth where they remained until about three years ago when they moved to Hartford where Barnet was employed in a defense plant.

She was prominent in community activities. She was a member of Bethlehem Chapter, O. E. S. and when living in Meredith served as the Matron of Ellacoya Chapter. She was President for several years of the Plymouth Chapter of the American Red Cross, also of the Hospital Aid Association and was a member of the Pemigewasset Woman’s Club and Enterprise Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in which she was an ardent worker. Survivors include the widower, two sons, CPO Francis E. Hughes of Norman, Oklahoma, and Norman Hughes of Plymouth, three grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Alice P. Batchelder of Peabody, Mass. Mrs. Alice Swain of Concord and Mrs. Dorothea Farnum of Meredith.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Church of the Holy Spirit with Rev. Edric A. weld, rector of Holderness School for Boys officiating. Burial was in the family lot at Green Grove Cemetery in Ashland. Bearers were Robert Ernst and Nelson Jacques of Plymouth, Maurice Chase of Center Harbor and Olin Philbrook of Meredith.
