Helen Ray Smith Windham, 92, of Caile, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Liberty Health & Rehab in Indianola. She was born in Kosciusko on December 21, 1921, and was the daughter of John Bennett and Minnie Lowery Smith.

Mrs. Windham graduated from Inverness High School in 1942, and was voted Most Intellectual by her classmates. She married her best friend, Sidney Windham, on June 15, 1943. They owned and operated Sid Windham Grocery for 43 years, and also had a farming operation.

Mrs. Windham was a longtime member of Caile United Methodist Church until its closure, then became a member of Inverness United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Hubert Smith, J. B. Smith and Charles E. Smith; Sisters, Mildred Collier, Elsie Murrah, Marjorie Burrell and Minnie Love Smith.

Mrs. Windham is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Sidney Windham of Caile; daughter, Dr. Jeannette Murphey (Joey) of Chunky, MS; grandchildren, Jay Murphey (Amanda) of Chunky, MS and Justin Murphey of Hattiesburg; sisters-in-law, Mollie Smith of Inverness, Bernice Smith of Indianola, and Katie Rhodes of Slidell, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 20, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 10:00 am at Inverness United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery, all under the direction of Burton Funeral Home.
