He was commissioned a Lieutenant and made the military his career. He received his airborne wings in 1959. He served two separate tours of duty in Vietnam where he received the Combat Infantryman’s badge and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Armor Badge. He also received several other medals including, several Bronze Stars and the Legion of Merit with an oak leaf cluster. He served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Middle Tennessee State University from 1968 to 1971 and served at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as Professor of Military Science from 1975 to 1979. He was honorably discharged and received a certificate of retirement from the U.S. Army in 1979. He also served as the Professor of the Junior ROTC programs at Central High School in Chattanooga and Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro. He was selected Teacher of the Year at Central High in 1982, and also at Riverdale in 1991. Dannie loved to encourage those around him. One of his joys in life was coaching the girl’s volleyball team at his beloved Riverdale High School.

In 1996, Col. Morris helped establish Fellowship United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro. As a Charter Member, he was deeply involved with the Adult Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart group. He will be remembered most by church members for his contagious smile, big hugs and “Have a Super Day” greeting.

Visitation will be at the Fellowship United Methodist Church Monday from 4-8 p.m. and the funeral will be held at the church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Donald W. Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the building fund of Fellowship United Methodist Church.
