Anne Bernice was born on 28 January 1939 in Vaden, Arkansas to Leonard "Shorty" and Margaret (Calloway) Hammonds. She had an older sister and three brothers. The Hammonds raised their family in Ouachita County.

Bernice (as she preferred to be called) married Dorsey Askew, Sr. and they were the parents of six children. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church, a homemaker, and the former owner operator of Smokehouse Barbecue in Hope. Everyone loved her cooking and enjoyed it again when she started working at Tabs convenience store in Hope making barbecue and her delicious pies. Bernice passed away at her home in Hope, Arkansas on 15 May 2016.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, her brother, Doyle Hammonds; her sister, Hazel Cathey; and her sister-in-law, Doris Worthey.

She is survived by her three sons, three daughters, two brothers, seven grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Wednesday evening, 18 May 2016 at Brazzel-Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, 19 May 2016 at Unity Baptist Church with Bro. Kenneth Bobo officiating followed by burial in Union Cemetery of Bodcaw, Arkansas.
