Mary Jane Hardenbergh was born in Tarrytown Village of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, on 21 August 1811. She was the daughter of Nicholas Hardenbergh (1786-1847) and Margaret Cronk (1790-1862). She lived with her grandparents, Garret Cronk (1759-1844) and Susannah Requea (1766-1851) from three years of age.

She had one older sister, Cornelia Ann (b. 15 May 1810), and ten younger siblings; Thomas Henry (b. 07 MAR 1813), Susan R. (b. 15 AUG 1816), Abram Jansen (b. 29 NOV 1817), John Bruyn (b. 10 DEC 1819), Garret C. (b. 19 DEC 1822), Gertrude (22 NOV 1824), Elias Otis (b. 03 OCT 1828), Rachel (b. 28 FEB 1829), Nicholas (b. 28 MAR 1831), and Eliza Maria (b. 17 JUN 1833).

Mary Jane married Oliver Perry Kenyon (son of Reynolds Kenyon, and Rachel Thurston, born 18 SEP 1809 in Barker, Broome County, New York), on 31 OCT 1831.

Mary and Oliver had ten children: Adeline (b. 1832), Jeanette (b. 1834), Julia Ann (b. 1835), Oliver Perry (b. 1837), Nicholas R. (b. 1840), Eliza Maria (b. 1843), Helen Jane (b. 1846), Edwin F. (b. 1848), Otis (b. 1850, dy), and William (b. 1856, dy).

They lived in Vermillion County, Indiana from 1836 to 1842, and then moved to DuPage County, Illinois, about ten miles north of York Center. During the Civil War, they lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and in 1871, they moved to Downers Grove Illinois, where they lived on South Main Street until they died. Their daughter Helen Jane lived in that home until her death in 1937.
