She was the daughter of Nicholas Hardenbergh (1786-1847) and Margaret Cronk (1790-1862). She lived with her grandparents, Garret Cronk (1759-1844) and Susannah Requea (1766-1851) from three years of age.

They lived in Vermillion County, Indiana from 1836 to 1842, and then moved to DuPage County, Illinois, about ten miles north of York Center. During the Civil War, they lived in Wheaton, Illinois, and in 1871, they moved to Downers Grove Illinois, where they lived on South Main Street until they died. Their daughter Helen Jane lived in that home until her death in 1937.
