A.J. "Jack" operated store near Oliver, IL with father, and 1872 they moved to Shiloh Township where he was engaged in operating a steam saw mill and grist mill near Garland.  At that time the settlement of Garland consisted of a store, a blacksmith shop and the Methodist Church.  In 1892 he was operating a sawmill near Sugar Creek.  For a time he was a partner in a Big Capstan plow which was pulled by eight oxen working in pairs.  This heavy equipment and powerful team were used to dig drainage ditches.  Again with Jack, he operated a store at Garland, according to Ollie Randleman of Paris, IL, who recalled the stories in 1964.
