Polly Alexander appears in the 1850 Census in Wilkes County living with her son William M Billings and his wife Sarah "Sally" Childers Billings. Polly moved in with William to help him raise his children after his first wife Winnifred Alexander left him and her children to marry Elijah Humphries Herbert.

Polly was married in the Church to James Billings. He refused to pay the Marriage Bond so their marriage was not considered legal by the State of North Carolina. This made her Mad and she used the name of Polly Alexander rather than Polly Billings all her life.
