Vicksburg Daily Whig; October 11th, 1855 The John Lane Obituary; The Warren County - Vicksburg Public Library, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi; Death of John Lane; This enabled and much beloved man has been "Gathered to his Father.: He died at his residence near this city, on yesterday morning of Yellow Fever, in the 67th year of his age. Judge Lane was a Georgian by birth, and came to this State about Forty years ago, in the capacity of a Minister of the Gospel, the country was then new and needed men of energy and lofty moral courage to meet the demands of the newly forming State of Society. Judge Lane was such a man. He possessed a sound and discriminating mind, was deliberate, calm and conscientious in the perform and of every duty, and possessed in a large degree that self abandonment and devotion to the welfare of his fellow man, which is one of the leading characteristics of a true Man and a True Christian. For Forty - Six years he fulfilled the duties of a most laborious Preacher of the Gospel, and for more than Thirty years of that time, not only gratuitously, but giving liberally of his own means for the support of the Church and the Ministry; And probably no man in the State has accomplished more good than he did, in his long and eventful life. In the early establishment of this country, he was elected Judge of the county Court, and while he presided over its deliberations, no man could have tendered greater satisfaction, with he ever impressed the people with his sterling qualities of candor, impartiality and uprightness. He had charge as a regular Pastor of several churches in this County, amend died as he had long desired, with the Harness of a true Soldier of Jesus on, He was a man of great kindness, of heart, considerate of the poor, is house a synoyme for hospitality, warm in friendships and forgiving in temper, Take him all in all, we shall not soon look upon his like again.
