Rev. James R. Smith was born in Georgia and moved to Claiborne Parish between 1850 & 1860. He was a farmer, carpenter, postmaster for Old Town, and a circuit rider preacher. He and 4 of his 9 sons built the Whitehall Methodist Church at Dykesville, La. on land that was donated by his brother-in-law, Francis Hall. Rev. Smith was their first pastor.
