Mrs. Alice Virginia Carter Porter, 59, died Wednesday at the JourneyCare Hospice Center in Glenview, IL.

Mrs. Porter, born in St. Mary's County, MD; where she and her eight siblings were raised in a small farming community. From a young age Alice knew she she wanted to see the world and at the age of 17, she joined the United States Army to help achieve her goal. The Army sent her to places she dreamed about: Germany, China, Italy, Japan, France and all across the United States. After 34 years of military service, she retired and spent her remaining years caring for her family, whom she loved deeply. She was a devout Catholic, going to church daily and ministering to the sick and infirmed. She was a giving person and had an infectious smile.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Porter, Jr., two sons, Paul Porter and wife Tameka and David Porter and wife Tara, five grandchildren, Paul, Devon, Adam, Alexandra, and Charlotte, three sisters, Margaret Jones, Grace Horner, Helen Robinson; two brothers, James Carter and Francis Carter, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was held at 1 PM, Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, Hedgesville, WV.

Burial was made in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
