Mary Welch Mitchell was the daughter of Charles F. and Anna Matella Welch Mitchell. She was born in Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation. Her parents were Methodist missionaries to the Indians in Oklahoma. She became a schoolteacher, and taught school in El Paso for over 50 years, the last 40 years at Austin High School.
