John Atkinson was born in Oklahoma, a son of John Riley Atkinson and Nancy Alice Gilbreath. They were married in 1897. They lived in Hobart, Oklahoma.

He attended Oklahoma A&M College (Oklahoma State University) where he was one of the five founding members of the Beta Xi chapter of the Kappa Alpha fraternity on March 18, 1920, the second fraternity at the college. The other founders were Henry Tate Brady, Cecil B Dickson, Dent Norval Hand and Russell Overstreet.

John married Ellen Nona Rainey. They had children Peggy Ann, Nancy Mae (1929–2010), Sallie L, and John Alexander.

He started the Atkinson Bros. Insurance Agency in Houston with his brother in 1936.

He had a second marriage to Travis Miller in June 1972, two years after the death of Ellen.

He died at 80 from prostate cancer.
