At Jefferson County, May the 11th, 1858

Dear Son and Daughter, after my best Respects to you I take my pen in hand to wright a few lines to you which will inform you that I am well at present truly hopeing these few lines of mine when they come to hand may find you enjoying perfect health. I have nothing strange nor diverting to wright to you at this time. I rec'd your affectionate letter dated the 11th of April last which afforded me great satisfaction to heare you was well. I would be glad to see you all once more before we are called from this world to eternity, if not so that we shall see each other in this life, let us try to make our calling and Election sure so that we may meet in heaven where parting will be no more. The Lord is good and merciful to them that seeks him in spirit and in truth. So let us apply to him who is able to set and prepare our souls to meet there where Joy never ends. I have lived to be very old and has got to be very little account though my health is very good, yet it is firtegeing to me to get a bout so I don't promise my self many more days to survive upon this Earth, though I often think if the lord will inable me I will try to see you all once more before I dy.

Tell your Brothers and Sisters that I am well and wishes to see them very much. I should have answered your letter sooner if it had come to hand sooner. I only Rec'd it the other day. We have had no mail since the first of January last till the first of this month. It is now running and expected to run regular this and at every other opportunity. nothing more at present. I'll come to a close by subscribing my self your loving Father till Death.

He appears to have been close to his daughter Martha Hollis Kennedy. There is a book written by Virginia L. Gilmer (Leroy Kennedy, Southern Patriot) where she discusses Martha Hollis Kennedy, a daughter of Elijah's and she provides some anecdotal information about Elijah and his family. This book is rather rare and I have not yet found a copy.
