Mary Phelan Houston McElwrath, 74, of Grenada, MS, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Grenada. Phelan was born September 6, 1941, in Birmingham, AL, to Mary Phelan Brown Houston and Sam Lacock Houston and moved to Grenada at the age of 5. She attended John Rundle High School and the University of Mississippi where she was an Ole Miss cheerleader and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority where she served as rush chairman. After her marriage to Ben McElwrath, Jr., she worked as a legal secretary for Mitchell M. Lundy, Sr., and then worked for the Mississippi Employment Security Commission until her retirement. During her membership of Junior Auxiliary of Grenada, Phelan served as President and volunteered for several years at Lovely Lane School, a school for the handicapped which was sponsored by Junior Auxiliary of Grenada. She also had been both a Cub Scouts Leader and a Girl Scouts Leader. She also served as a mentor for three years at Grenada Elementary School. Phelan was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Vestry, the Episcopal Church Women, Sunday School Teacher, a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Daughters of the King Prayer Group and the Altar Guild. She was a member of 20/20 Financial Partners and was an avid bridge player.

Phelan is survived by her husband, Ben Ward McElwrath, Jr., and her two sons, David Benjamin McElwrath and his wife, Angela Wade, and Robert Avent McElwrath and his wife, Katie Yates, and her grandchildren, Elizabeth August McElwrath and Braiden Wayne Yates, all of Grenada.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Grenada. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Grenada. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at McKibben and Guinn Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
