Services Held for John S. Albaugh, Well-Known Ankeny Farmer – Services for John S. Albaugh, 82, retired Ankeny farmer and member of the Polk County board of education from 1929-1950, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ankeny Methodist Church with burial in Des Moines Valley Brethren Cemetery. Mr. Albaugh died Friday evening of a coronary thrombosis. Mr. Albaugh had lived on his farm near Ankeny for 80 years. He served on the Ankeny school board from 1917 to 1929 and was a Douglas township trustee from 1912 to 1942. He was an honorary trustee of the Ankeny Methodist Church. Survivors include four sons, Claude of Winterset, Floyd of Elkhart, Charles of Ankeny, Otis of Mason City; four daughters, Mrs. Goldie Steward of Boone, Mrs. Leota Goins of Ankeny, Mrs. Wilma Brazelton of Ankeny, and Mrs. Marie Mathis of Elkhart. He is also survived by two brothers, Elmer E. of Havelock, Alva of Elkhart; 28 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. John Sylvester Albaugh, eldest son of Diana and Daniel Albaugh was born in Wapello County, Iowa, January 22, 1872 and passed away at his home, near Ankeny, Iowa of a heart attack, July 3, 1954 at the age of 82 years. At an early age he joined the Hickory Grove Methodist Church, later transferring his membership to the Ankeny Methodist Church, where he remained a faithful member until his death. On January 1st 1896 he was united in marriage to Ida Mae Hildreth and to this union was born 13 children. He was a willing and active leader in the church, serving on the Board of Trustees, also Board of Education and other Community Activities. His greatest pride was centered around his home and in farming. Many of his happy hours were spent enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his later years, he enjoyed working with his flowers and collecting shells. He is survived by his eight children, four sons, Claude H., Winterset, Floyd W., Elkhart, Charles S., Ankeny, Otis E., Mason City. Four daughters – Mrs. Goldie Steward, Boone, Mrs. Leota Goins, Ankeny, Mrs. Wilma Bazelton, Ankeny, Mrs. Marie Mathis, Elkhart, twenty-eight grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren. Also surviving him are two brothers, Elmer E. Albaugh, Havelock and Alva Albaugh, Elkhart. He was preceded in death by his wife and five children, Lester R. who died in service in 1918, Dale E., Opal Mae and an infant daughter, his mother and father and one sister, Della Bird.
