Special to the New York Times, June 28, 1964.

NEW HAVEN, June 27—A. C. Gilbert Jr., president of the toy company bearing his name, died today in Grace‐New Haven Community Hospital. He was 44 years old.

Mr. Gilbert, like his father, who founded the company in 1909 never used his first and middle names, Alfred Carlton. The company makes Erector Sets, American Flyer trains, chemistry sets, powered airplanes and other toys. Mr. Gilbert was president of the Toy Manufacturers of the U. S. A. last year.

He succeeded his father, who died in 1961, as president in 1954. Mr. Gilbert continued in that post until December, 1961, when the Wrather Corporation of Los Angeles acquired its controling stock interest, and he became board chairman. During a financial reorganization six months ago, Mr. Gilbert returned as president.
Mr. Gilbert was born here, attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and was graduated from Yale University in 1941 with an engineering degree. He was a design engineer for Naval ordnance at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, N. Y., from 1941 to 1946. He then joined the family company as secretary and took the additional duties of treasurer in 1950.

He had been president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association of New Haven County. He was a director of the Second National Bank and New Haven College. Mr. Gilbert also was an organizer and had been president of the Junior Achievement movement here.

He is survived by widow, the former Miss Jean Tibbetts; a daughter, Julie; three sons, A.C. Gilbert 3d, John and David; his mother, and two sisters, Mrs. Robert F. Chase and Mrs. George Rowbottom 2d.
