Janet Hunter, age 58, of Helena, died unexpectedly at home, Oct. 6, 2006.

Janet was born July 29, 1948, in Helena to Lloyd and Martha (Pool) Hunter, and was raised by aunts Margaret (Peggy) Hunter and Agnes (Aggie) Hunter in Helena. After attending Kessler and C.R. Anderson elementary schools, she graduated from Helena High School in 1968. As a child, she attended Bate's Bar J. Ranch, a summer camp for children in Alberta, Canada. After high school graduation, she became a counselor at the camp for several summers. Janet was a skilled counselor who loved horses and ranch animals. This experience became an important tool she used during her elementary teaching career.

In 1970, she graduated with degrees in elementary education and library science from Montana State University (Bozeman). She first taught at Rossiter School in Helena and later at rural schools in Canyon Creek, Lavina and Elliston, where she was a dedicated, skillful and effective teacher.

Taking a giant career turn, she worked as a supervisor in the State Capitol building for Bompart Cleaning Service for nearly five years. Her last employment was with the Montana State Talking Book Library as reader advisor for about four years.

Janet's love for animals, a quality she exhibited throughout her life, was extended to horses, cats, dogs, parrots, rats, snakes, turtles, fish, and even some insects. Many of these were used to teach children the value and importance of kindness to animals.

A few years ago, she started a small business called Dragonfly Enterprises. The business involved activities that combined her knowledge and love of animals with innovative greeting cards, creative cuisine, catering, editing, and other computer work.

Janet was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbra Mullin; uncles, Bob Hunter and Dan Hunter; Dan's wife Sadie, and Aunt Peggy Hunter, all of Helena.

She is survived by half brother Matthew Brass and half sister Lisa Brass of Hawaii; aunt, Aggie Hunter; uncle and aunt, Jimmy and Roberta Pool; Aunt Fae Lamb; and cousins, Bill Hunter and Brooke Hunter, all of Helena. Other cousins are Susan Wagner, Becky Simmons, Doug Lamb, Dave Lamb, Marsha Hunter and Jenne Blahut.

A memorial service for Janet will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the First Church of Christ Scientist, 1800 Highland Ave. A reception hosted by Janet's family will follow.

Janet will be interred in the family plot in the Forestvale Cemetery.

Memorials in Janet's name can be made to the Mikal Kellner Foundation For Animals, P.O. Box 389, Helena, MT 59624, phone 406-443-6532.
