(note from Candyce Hardin Williams Glaser)
Her daughter Frances Marie Schrad Jochum, often told the story of the Osterhaus family (her mothers family) coming to the US from Germany. Prior to leaving Germany, the parents purchased new shoes for all of the children but would not allow the children to wear them until they reached the US. The children were told, "These are new shoes for the new world." The parents were afraid that the children would lose their shoes or have them stolen so they tied the laces together and hung them around the kids necks. The children wore the shoes for the entire trip on the boat, putting them on for the first time when the boat docked in the US.
