Walter H. Hartung, 85, passed away on Jan. 22, 2003 at Trinity Hospital in Minot, N.D. while spending the holidays with his daughter and family at Kenmare, N.D.

Water was born in Laurel on Oct. 10, 1917 to Henry and Mary (Rupp) Hartung. He was educated at Laurel and employed in farm work, The Billings Brickyard and Great Western Sugar Factory through 1942. He worked in the Vancouver, Wash. shipyards from 1942-1945. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 and was honor-ably discharged in 1946. He worked as a crane operator 1946-1957. He was co-owner of Hartung Inc. and the Mint Bar in Billings.

Walter retired in 1982. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Eastern Star, Insulation and Asbestos Workers Union and Lake Hills Country Club.

Walter married Amelia (Millie) Ginter in 1939 and had two daughters, Eleanor and Dorothy. He married Margaret Ferguson in 1961.

Walter enjoyed golfing every day with his buddies, salmon fishing in Oregon and going to Las Vegas. He also enjoyed his coffee at the Shrine every morning.

Surviving family includes daughter, Eleanor and husband, James Ackerman; son-in-law, Alan Haydal,; sister, Esther Staley; half-brother, Stanley Hartung; and several step-brothers and sisters; grandchildren, Julie (Alden) Schweitzer, Jay (Cathy) Ackerman, Janice (Rubin) Mara, Danny (Jessie) Haydal, Clay Haydal, Debra Lancy, Alan Haydal Jr.; great-grandchildren, Anthony Schweitzer, Ashley, Cody and Nicole Ackerman, Aimee and Alex Mara, Danielle, Hans, Corrina and Destinee Haydal, April Gouse, Linsey and Bobby Lancy; great-great-grandchildren, Tyler and Austin Carner, Kyle Peterson and Hannah Schweitzer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; daughter, Dorothy Haydal; sister, Lillian Hartung; and brothers, Benny, Raymond, Robert and Lawrence Hartung.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31 in the Pilgrim Congregational Church, 409 S. 36th, Billings. Interment is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Billings.
