Lawrence W. “Larry” Sonoski, 82, of Jefferson, passed away Wednesday at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born March 16, 1934 in Oil City, Pa, the son of Wen and Lottie Sonoski. Larry managed various supermarkets throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania before settling in Ashtabula County in 1964. For the past forty years, he owned and operated the Jefferson Golden Dawn. He took great pride in growing and improving his store, including expanding its inventory to include sporting goods. Over the years he employed countless members of the community, as well as his children and grandchildren. An avid musician, Larry loved polka music. He played the accordion with the Missouri Foxhunters and the Sonny Hayes Band, as well as with Frank Yankovic, Art Perko, and Frankie Kramer. On Sundays, he played on the Polka Variety Show on Channel 12 out of Erie. He loved working with and spending time with his family. He and his wife Joanne enjoyed dining out, dancing, and fishing together. He always looked forward to his family’s annual Mother’s Day fishing and boating trip to Canada. A lover of the outdoors, Larry also enjoyed hunting and running. He took pride in maintaining his home and property, including his backyard pond, which he loved for his children and grandchildren to use for fishing and swimming.
Larry loved buying and trading cars and was quick to loan his vehicles to friends and family in need. He was a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He was a member of St. Joseph Calasanctius Catholic Church in Jefferson. Survivors include his children, Cyndi (Charles) Hamilton, Debbie (Tom) Stapel, Laurie (Mike) Calaway, Jacquie (Jon) Brand, Larry (Tanya) Sonoski, Jr. and Chris Sonoski; 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne; daughter, Lynda Covell; grandson, Jeffrey Jackson; and sister, Elizabeth Ann Bast. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday May 11, 2016 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Catholic Church, 32 East Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Fr. John E. Sheridan officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Joseph Calasanctius Catholic Church.

Ashtabula-Linda J. (Sonoski) Covell, 44, of East 51 St. died Wednesday February 23, 2005 at UHHS- Memorial Hospital of Geneva.

Born May 18, 1960 in Erie, Pa, she was the daughter of Larry and Joanne (Wintemute) Sonoski, Sr.

Linda was a cheerleader for six years at Jefferson High School, graduating in 1978.

She worked at Jefferson Golden Dawn for twenty-three years, before going to Youngstown State for Court Stenography.

Linda enjoyed skiing, line dancing, shopping, jogging, bicycling, and collected precious moment’s figures.

Survivors include her parents, Larry and Joanne Sonoski, Sr. of Austinburg; four sisters, Cyndi (Charles) Hamilton of Dorset, Debbie(Tom) Stapel of Concord Twp., Laurie (Mike) Calaway of Jefferson and Jacquie (Jon)Brand of Marietta, GA; two brothers, Larry (Tanya) Sonoski, Jr. of Ashtabula, and Chris (Tammy) Sonoski of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Calling hours will be held Sunday February 27, 2005 from 2-4 P.M. at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church, 32 East Jefferson St., Jefferson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday February 28, 2005 at 10:00 AM at the St Joseph Calasanctius Church, Rev. Fr. Stephen Wassie presiding. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
