Resided in Lafayette, Oregon prior to moving to Grass Valley, Sherman County,Oregon in 1897. He was a blacksmith by trade and owned and operated a shop in Grass Valley, prior to moving to a farm on the John Day River. He spent his last days in Portland. Leakage in his heart caused his death.

His service was conducted in Grass Valley, performed by his fellow IOOF comrades from Wasco, Grass Valley and The Dalles.

Three sons: Ray, Ralph and Earl by his first wife Mary M. Messinger whom he married in 1875. she died about 1895 after the birth of her son Earl in 1892 and before the 1900 census.
