Arthur Joel Axelrod, M.D., a general surgeon certified by the American Board of Surgery (1967), died at home on Sunday, May 1, 2016 of cardiac disease. He was 80 years old.

Dr. Axelrod attended Emory University and was Phi Beta Kappa. A graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine and a member Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society, he was a practicing surgeon, passionate teacher, humble humanist and deeply devoted to his family. Following an internship and residency in general surgery at Charity Hospital of Louisiana, he served active duty in the United States Air Force (1961-1970). Completing his service as Chief, Department of Surgery USAF Regional Hospital, Maxwell AFB, Alabama,

he was honorably discharged as Lt. Colonel, USAF MC.

He settled in New Orleans and became medical partner at the practice then known as Drs. Houston, Roy, Faust and Ewin (HRFE). He served as Managing Partner of HRFE from 1983-1985, becoming Medical Director of the successor clinics, Concentra Medical Centers, retiring in 2001. He returned to Concentra in 2012 as staff physician. A lifelong learner and active educator,

Dr. Axelrod returned to Tulane University Medical School as Clinical Associate Professor Department of Surgery (1970-present) and then as Adjunct Professor Structural and Cellular Biology, Section of Gross Anatomy (2001-2014), where he lectured, engaged his students in the intricacies of the human body and guided them in the anatomy lab.

One student remembering him fondly said, "he taught us a lot and we will be better doctors because he was a part of our lives." Ever committed to medicine, he was a member of the following professional societies:

Fellow American College of Surgeons; American Medical Association; Louisiana State Medical Society; Orleans Parish Medical Society; American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; Mid South Occupational and Environmental Medical Association; New Orleans Surgical Society (serving as Treasure, Vice President and President); Oscar Creech Surgical Society; Surgical Association of Louisiana (serving as member of the Board of Directors and then as Secretary); Southeastern Surgical Congress and Tulane Surgical Society.

As committed as he was to his patients and students, he was most devoted to his family.
