Ray graduated from Milton High School in 1952. Known to his childhood friends and relatives as “Sonny Bowersox”. He founded, owned and operated Milton Transportation, Inc., BTR, Inc., Bowersox Truck Sales & Service, Inc., Milton Warehouse and Distribution, and Milton 32 Truck Plaza. Before becoming a business owner, Ray was a dump truck driver, a truck driver and a mechanic. Ray served on the Board of Directors at West Milton State Bank for 34 years and an active member of the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association. He was also a member of the Milton Masonic Lodge 256 and the Scottish Rite in Williamsport. He was a member of Paradise United Church of Christ in Milton.
One of his greatest passions was restoring and collecting, classic and antique cars. He was a member of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, the Antiques Automobile Club of America Susquehannock Region, and the Classic Car Club of America. He and Lou enjoyed driving, traveling and touring the United States in their cars. Ray did not want a vehicle to sit in a museum. He felt if it had wheels, it was meant to be driven. For their traveling, Ray enjoyed the challenge of driving their motorhomes, with the cars in tow.
He enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, 4-wheelers, dozers, backhoes, tractors and operating anything with a motor. Earlier in life he raced go-karts with his brother. (If it had wheels, he loved it!) Ray also loved being in the mountains and spending time with his beloved family. He thoroughly enjoyed leading his family and friends on trail rides over the mountain top.
He is survived by his wife Lou, five children and their spouses Richard M. Bowersox and wife Sherry of Turbotville, Dana R. Bowersox and husband Zach of Milton, Deborah I. Rachau of Danville, Karen B. Yocum of Watsontown, and Shannan B. Guthrie and husband Brent of Lancaster; nine grandchildren Cody Rachau, Mandy Rachau, Lauren Hursh, Shane Bowersox, Joshua Foresman, Latricia R. Yocum, Lex R. Yocum, Courtney Guthrie, and Tate Guthrie; and two great grandchildren Enzo Rachau and Axel Rachau.
Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne D. Bowersox, and his sister, June R. Bowersox.
Friends and relatives will be received on Monday, March 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton. Funeral services will be held privately.
The family will provide flowers and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s memory be made to either the Danville SPCA, 2801 Bloom Rd. Danville, PA 17821 or to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
