Velma Martyne Smith, 84, of McGregor, passed away on October 15, 2006. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, October 16, 2006, at Cole Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 1 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at the funeral home with the Rev. Carroll Hambrick and the Rev. David Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park.

Velma Martyne was born in Oglesby, Texas, to the late Ephrian and Ada Mae Abel. They provided a loving Christian home where she grew up along side her older brother, Dale Abel.

Martyne attended school in Oglesby, Texas, and graduated in 1939. She took her first train ride in 1943, when she headed to San Antonio to start working for the South Western Bell Telephone Company. In San Antonio on Sept. 29, 1945, a young man she had been dating by the name of Thomas Harold Smith asked her to become his wife and on Dec. 23, 1945, they became united in marriage.

Martyne started work for the McLennan County Electric Coop in 1963. She retired in 1987. She also worked for B.J. Allen Insurance Company in 1958, and S. Amsler Company. Martyne was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church and was church treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Martyne enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She would often go out to eat with the ladies after church on Sunday. Martyne was blessed with many wonderful friends and a family she enjoyed spending time with.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, in March of 1992; and older brother, Dale Abel, in February, 2004.

Survivors include her son, Van Smith and his wife, Bell, of McGregor; granddaughter, Angela Kennedy and her husband, Matthew, of Dallas; her sister-in-law, Sarah Abel, of Fort Worth; and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
