Charles Brown Batts, passed away on Sunday evening, May 1, 2016 at Liberty Commons in Benson, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Van Buren Batts, his mother Oza Brown Batts, his brother Nathan William Batts, his first wife and mother of his children Mavis Stone Batts, and his late wife Marie Moore Batts.
He is survived by his daughter Deborah Batts Fedrick and son-in-law Hollis, of Princeton, NC along with their son Timothy. He is also survived by his daughter Lacy Batts Welch and her husband Curtis of Odessa, FL along with grandsons Jacob and Jesse. A brother, Lewis Jasper Batts of Wendell also survives him.
Charles was born at home in a now moved historic home that was previously across the street from New Hope Baptist Church. Charles was the oldest of three sons that his father had in his later years. His father was born during the civil war reconstruction and had eleven daughters.
Charles served in the United States Army as a guard for the Koje-do Prison POW Camp in Japan. Charles later worked at Westinghouse in Raleigh as a security guard before returning to his lifelong love of digging dirt. Charles owned and operated heavy earth moving equipment and continued to do so about 50 hours a week until almost 80 years of age.
Charles attended New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh and Raleigh Church of God for many years, teaching Sunday School in both churches. In the last years, he had attended church with his daughter and son-in-law at Coats Church of God, with Hollis being Pastor.
Charles said that the most important decision in his life was accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior at 15. He repeatedly said that nothing else mattered and that you missed the most important part of the human journey if you didn’t make it right with God and put Him first.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, May 4th from 6-8 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh). Funeral Services will be held at 11 am in the Old Chapel of New Hope Baptist Church (4301 Louisburg Road in Raleigh), with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Minister to the Military at www.MTTM.org in his memory. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.MitchellatRMP.com
