Chesapeake - Benjamin Errington Lingo, a retired fire marshal with the 5th Naval District, died January 23, 1989 in his home. He lived in the 4000 block of Tanglewood Trail.

A native of the Eastern Shore, Mr. Lingo was raised in Norfolk and was a former Maury High School football star. He began in civil service in 1942 after working as a superintendent for Ford Motor Company in Norfolk.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and Doric Masonic Lodge 44.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Whitehead Lingo; two daughters, Nancy L. Gunter of Lottsburg and Carole L. Weigand of Virginia Beach; a sister, Marguerite L. Corprew of Virginia Beach, a brother, Irving E. Lingo of Norfolk; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. George B. Neas. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, and at the residence at other times.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
